Heading into 2017 second year Payette head man Kip Crofts hopes to utilize the leadership of returning senior quarterback Christopher Walker and All-Conference receiver and defensive back Bryant Gerdes.

Both players highlight the group of returners for the Pirates, a team that aims to improve upon a 1-7 mark from a season ago.

One of the things that is a bright spot for this group is the solid core of locker room guys in place, something which should help get a turn-around headed in the right direction.

"I am most excited about working with these wonderful young men for a second season," said Crofts.

Other key returners for Payette include seniors such as fullback and linebacker Anthony Dovalina and offensive and defensive lineman Tyran Mahoney.

On the lines, Mahoney will be joined by junior Cole Anderson to be the key cogs.

Another key impact newcomer that Crofts mentioned was junior linebacker and running back Wyatt Sweet. The expectation is that Sweet will receive a heavy dose of the carries from the backfield, while being one of the top tacklers on the defensive side of things.

Offensively the Pirates will look to become more balanced between the run and pass, while on the defensive side of the ball the goal is to simply get off the field quicker, something which was a major struggle in allowing more than 30 points in all but two games last season.

Aside from a 44 point outburst against Marsing early in last year, Payette really struggled to put up points, never eclipsing more than 15 in any of the other seven games. That has to change for the Pirates to leapfrog a few teams in the SRV.

The first game of the season for Payette will come on August 25 in Meridian against the 2A Cole Valley Chargers.
