Team Preview:

Homedale had some hard-luck losses in 2016 that the team will look to avenge as the Trojans embark on a new year with plenty of promise for the group in place.

Lots of skill position talent is back on offense to go along with three All-Conference selections and four Honorable Mention All-Conference athletes on defense.

That combination should make the Trojans a tough out in the 3A ranks this season, as the team appears to be the primary challenger for defending state champion Fruitland in conference play.

Offensively look for the two-headed backfield tandem of Karsen Freelove and Mason Kincheloe to pace things when Homedale has the ball. Each back should benefit from a balanced attack that has big play capability from the receiver core as well in the form of First Team All-Conference honoree Wyatt Wolfe and Honorable Mention Carson Brown.

“In our skill positions we return a lot of starters from last year,” said Head Coach Matt Holtry. “Our spread offense and up-tempo no-huddle should have improved timing this year and should bring about better consistency.”

The offensive line is led by Clayton Wolfe and Kaden Henry, while Scott Matlock looks to move outside to tight end after earning Second Team All-Conference as a lineman last season.

On the back end of the Homedale defense, multiple starters return, giving confidence that the Trojans could be stingy on that side of the ball.

Those returners are highlighted by every member of the linebacker core and a couple of key defensive backs in Kincheloe and Brown. Matlock is an enforcer on the defensive line and Clayton Wolfe will be a big presence on the front as well.

“The return of several starters at linebacker and defensive back will bring more confidence and better communication,” said Holtry.

He hopes to see his group improve when it comes time to slow down the run.

Within a conference as tough as the SRV annually is, the Trojans know they have to be at the top of their game on a weekly basis.

“Each and every game is a must-see game in the SRV, as it is one of the most competitive conferences in the state,” added Holtry.

Homedale’s first test of 2017 will come on the road with a non-conference matchup against the New Plymouth Pilgrims on August 25.
