The Weiser Wolverines battled through a tough Snake River Valley Conference to earn a playoff spot in 2016, then headed up north and knocked off Priest River before falling to 3A power Shelley at Holt Arena.

For a team that had won just two games the year prior and which failed to score more than 22 points during a game all of last year, the 5-5 record at the end of the season was a great testament to what a quality group of hard-working athletes Head Coach John Srholec Jr. has at his disposal.

All five of the Wolverines wins last year came by a touchdown or less, as the cardiac kids found ways to stay in games and give themselves a chance.

To take the next step and inch closer to the top of the conference, Weiser will need to find a way to get more points on the board, something which junior quarterback Brody vonBrethorst hopes to help the Wolverines to do.

He is joined in the backfield by running backs Braden Bumgarner and Juan Garcia, both juniors as well.

Weiser lost a lot of offensive talent from the graduating senior class of a year ago, including playmaker Bridger Bumgarner from the receiver position.

In the receiver core this time around, Jake Eisenbarth and Paul Crawford lead the returners, while Mikaid Wall and Hayden Wilson-Palmer are a couple of other good options in the passing game for vonBrethorst.

"[Our] quarterback and offensive players will be our driving force," said Srholec Jr.

The 19th year head coach mentioned throwing the ball and being more versatile as areas of focus to improve on in the upcoming campaign.

Defensively there is a lot of turnover for the Wolverines, meaning there will be a transition period to getting the unit up to the standard.

"New look defense," added Srholec Jr. "[We're] getting the kids used to it and running it well as a team."

For the long-time head coach in Weiser this team excites him with 26 members of the 35-man playoff roster from a year ago returning this season.

That experience should give the Wolverines a good launching point into this year, with the first game scheduled on August 25 at Buhl, which can be watched live and free on IdahoSports.com.
