Team Preview: Written by: Sven Alskog
Bill Brock has been around for a while at Middleton - 18 years to be exact - so the seasoned head coach has seen a little bit of everything when it comes to football in Idaho. This year he will have one of the toughest conferences during that time period in front of him, with quality teams coming back for Vallivue, Skyview, Bishop Kelly and Emmett to name a few in the 4A SIC.
His Vikings look to be one of those contenders as well, led by senior quarterback Mitch Beitia, running back Landon Ebbers and All-State kicker Neal Weber. That trio will pile on a lot of points for Middleton this season.
"[We have] good skilled kids and should be solid up front," said Brock.
The lines on both ends look pretty good for the Vikings, highlighted by familiar seniors Eddie Scott, Josh Mertz and Josh Sheffeld.
Defensively quality talent is back in the secondary, something which will help against some of the higher profile passing attacks in the 4A classification.
"We have some experience on the back end," said Brock. "We have to stay healthy."
Hayden Smith and Rhyker Sandoval are joined by Beitia and Ebbers in that back end of the defense.
Tyler Rupp and Sheridan White have big roles leading the linebacker core. This will be one of the key areas for Middleton to get right early in the season, as Brock has to replace a couple of three year starters in Jaden Coombs, Chase Conrad and Chase Downs.
The main key to the season though is similar to what you will hear from a lot of coaches throughout the state.
"Stay healthy and develop inexperienced players."
Middleton gets the season started on August 25 at Fruitland, the defending 3A state champions.
