Team Preview:

It's quite clear when looking at the roster assembled for the 2016 Council Lumberjacks that this is going to be a physical football team.

That physicality starts in the backfield with senior running back JT Mahon, a bruiser who will help Council control the time of possession battle. For his efforts last season Mahon earned First Team All-Conference at running back, while also taking home Second Team All-Idaho honors and Long Pin Conference Defensive MVP at linebacker.

Known for quality offensive linemen coming through the program, the Lumberjacks will look to Caleb Shumway, Tyler Krueger and Bodie Getusky to open up holes and give quarterback Brett Rosengrant time to pass.

Look for the defensive line to be the unit which packs the most punch though.

"Our defensive line has the potential to be very physical with Josh Mahon, Taylor Corse, Tyler Krueger (8 sacks), Caleb Shumway and Bodie Getusky," said Head Coach Dan Shumway.

Of those talents, both Krueger and Getusky were Second Team All-Conference selections last season.

The back end of the defense looks to be well-positioned to be a strength as well.

"At linebacker we are led by JT Mahon who had 129 tackles last year, along with David Byers, Emmit Hileman and potential impact newcomers Kolar Corkill and Bonner Paradis. Defensive backs will be Brett Rosengrant, Lance Nichols, Kaiden Hoffman and Sammy Mahon. We should have very good overall team speed on defense," said Shumway.

A nice influx of new talent to mesh with the returners makes it easy for the head coach to pinpoint what he is most excited about in the new year.

"The experience coming back at key positions as well as some very good new players we will be adding to the mix."

While the Lumberjacks do have the potential to deliver the punch to the opposition, in 2015 the injury bug provided a tough counterpunch. The result was a season which came to an end earlier than the team would have liked, leaving a hungry group ready for a new challenge.

Shumway says the key to a successful season is staying healthy, as Council does not possess a surplus of depth.

On offense expect Mahon to be heavily relied on, although quarterback Brett Rosengrant provides a big play threat who will also be able to hold on to the ball, throwing just one interception last year. His targets are highlighted by Second Team All-Conference receiver Lance Nichols.

It will most likely come down to Council and Salmon River once again in the 1AD2 Long Pin Conference, with the matchup scheduled for October 14 in Riggins.

The Lumberjacks will begin the season on the road against the high-powered Lapwai Wildcats.
