Team Preview: Written by: Will Hoenike
When the Lakeside Knights started the 2015 football season with six – count ‘em – straight home games to open the season, it may have seemed inevitable what would happen in 2016.
Five of the team’s first six games will be played away from Plummer.
The good news is that third-year head coach Chris Dohrman has some talented upper-classmen to lean on, led by returning 1st-team All-White Star League QB/LB Bryar Sanchez and 2nd-team All-White Star League RB/LB Jordan Davidson. Both have the ability to be explosive; Sanchez ran for 110 yards last October in a win over Kootenai and Davidson, in the same game, also eclipsed 100 yards on the ground, including an 88-yard scoring jaunt.
“We have a good backfield,” Dohrman said. “We need to be able to play better defense. We were able to score last season, we just couldn’t stop anyone.”
Numbers support what Coach Dohrman told the Preview. Throw out one game against eventual 1A Division 2 finalist Deary, the Knights averaged nearly 25 points per game, including 44 in the aforementioned victory over rival Kootenai and 36 in the team’s season-ending loss to Lewis County. The flip side of that coin, however, is that the team was punctured for more than 50 points on defense five times in nine games.
“We need to improve our tackling and coverage this season as a team,” Dohrman continued, but quickly added, “We should have a good group of younger players to mix in with our junior and seniors.”
Sanchez will pull double duty, as most players in 8-man football do, as linebacker as well as quarterback. He’ll be joined at linebacker by Bishop Fisher and Joseph Bohlman, a trio that Dohrman sees as a strength going into the season.
Up front, Paul Sperber will be asked to clog running lanes and create a pass rush from his defensive tackle position while the speedy Davidson will play defensive back. Despite opening with five of six games on the road, Knights fans have reason for optimism this season. Four of the five road games are against old North Star foes before closing out the season with three straight games at home.
If Lakeside can hang tough on the road early, its postseason fate will be in its own hands in October with key White Star League games against Timberline, Deary and Lewis County in Plummer.
Scratch out wins on the road, stay healthy and give yourself a chance late. The White Star League is a difficult path to navigate but, with talented, experienced returners on the field, the Lakeside Knights can adopt a saying that many teams have used in the past – “Why Not Us?”
The first test comes on September 2, when the Knights travel to Kendrick.
