Team Preview: Written by: Sven Alskog
After advancing to the 2014 1AD2 state championship, the Wilder Wildcats followed up with a 4-4 mark last season behind a very young group.
What that means for 2016 is a much more experienced group with talent in place to make some noise.
Nine seniors are back and led by one of the elite offensive playmakers in the conference, quarterback Caulen Michael (pictured). In his first season at the patrols the dual-threat rushed for over 1,000 yards, while at the same time throwing 11 touchdowns. The 23 combined touchdowns on the offensive side of things for Michael from last year should skyrocket in the new campaign.
Where the Wildcats struggled offensively was in finding a passing game resembling the effectiveness from the AJ Castellanos era, which was highlighted by the former quarterbacks 35 touchdowns through the air during his senior season.
On both sides of the ball eighth year Head Coach Kyle DalSoglio sees a good mix of returners to compliment the newcomers.
"[We have] good experience coming back with some young talent coming up," said DalSoglio.
Expect the offensive front to be a big factor with First Team All-Conference center Jacob Aguilar and Second Team All-Conference guard Alex Bravo highlighting the unit.
Staying healthy and taking things one game at a time will be important for Wilder.
Oscar Puga, a Second Team All-Conference linebacker, along with Michael, a First Team honoree, will bring a good middle to the Wildcat defense. Aguilar highlights the front line.
"We have a good balance of experience and leadership, along with the expectation of young players playing a key role on both sides of the ball," said DalSoglio.
The coach circled the rivalry with Notus on October 21 as one of the big matchups for the upcoming season. That game was a 43-42 Wilder victory on the road last season. The Wildcats get 2016 underway at Cascade on August 26 before three home games against Lighthouse Christian, Salmon River and Tri-Valley.
