A few years ago, the Timberline football team's motto was “Build the Tradition.”

That inspired some of the younger players coming through the Timberline pipeline. Now those younger players have become the seniors that will be the core of the Wolves this season.

And those Wolves are making it clear that they want to make an impact in their final season of high school football.

Thus the team's motto this year: “We are the Tradition.”

It's a motto with a bit of swagger, to be sure. And if this year's team is going to live up to that motto, they'll have to follow through on the goals of sixth-year head coach Kirk Copeland.

“We need more consistent yards in the run game and an improved passing game – especially in terms of efficiency,” Copeland said.

The heart of any good offense is its offensive line, and Copeland thinks he should have a good one this season.

“Our O-line should be our strength,” he said. “We have some returning players with good size and good strength.”

The leaders in the offensive trenches figure to be seniors Chad Turner, Alex Gilbert and Jared Reichle. Add in junior Alex Benson and the Wolves should be able to push some piles forward.

The Wolves will have some options to carry the football behind their big offensive line, but look for junior Matt Roberts to emerge as a candidate as one of the team's playmakers.

Speaking of playmakers, the Wolves will certainly try to find ways to get the ball in the hands of wide receiver Terek Zimmerman. The senior was named Second Team All-Conference as a junior.

On the defensive side of the ball, Copeland thinks he has a secondary that could be a strength, with some talent up front that could also stir things up.

“We have a couple players with experience returning to our defensive backfield,” he said. “And we have three guys up front who could be very good.”

So will this Timberline team live up to its motto?
Copeland said the answer to that question will ultimately depend on how much players with limited experience can blossom when given the opportunity.

“We are completely unproven, and this year is completely different,” he said. “I'm excited to see if the kids compete hard all year and how far they've come over the past two or three years.”

Fans might have a pretty good idea how far the players have come by the fifth game of the season, a matchup against Borah.

“It's the first pod game and it's also a crucial game,” Copeland said. “Also, Borah and Timberline have built a bit of a rivalry the last few years, playing some very close games.”
