Team Preview

Written by David Bashore

The Wallace girls basketball team hasn’t made the state tournament since 2008. The Miners are hoping that can change with the returning talent they have back for the 2015-16 season.

Wallace returns six players, including three seniors: point guard Gretchen Farkas and forwards Tamra Jackson and Shelby Maiszak. Junior guards Maryssa Hogamire and Sierra Brantz return, as does junior forward Hannah Sheppard. Of those, Farkas and Hogamire were all-league honorees last season.

The Miners will lean heavily on these six to run the floor and utilize the full range of their shooting ability. This season, emphasis falls on attacking the rim and opening up opportunities that way, both in the post and from longer range.

Defensively a hustling, high-energy press should force turnovers and create high-percentage shots going the other way for Wallace, but help-side defense will need to improve to avoid giving away easy looks to the other team.

Coach Chris Lund says he’s excited to see the team improve over the course of the season and make a run at the state tournament. He wants his bunch to score regularly and outrun the opposition, and if they can do that they should be in good shape as February looms ever nearer.
