Trent Harrison steps in as the new coach of the Caldwell boys basketball program.
Being a first-year coach can be a daunting task, but Harrison can draw upon his experience as the Cougars' junior varsity coach for the past two seasons. During that time, he also served as a varsity assistant, so he's not completely unfamiliar with the players he'll be coaching this season. And Harrison wasn't handed an empty cupboard, which is always a good thing for a rookie coach.
If he's looking for floor leadership, Harrison can turn to senior guard Austin Van Horne, who was named to the 4A SIC second team last season. Forrest Smith (4A SIC honorable mention) also returns as a senior guard.
The Cougars return three other seniors and three juniors whom Harrison has seen play. Throw in new guard George Tarlas and Caldwell certainly looks like a team that won't have to start from scratch in Harrison's first season.
Harrison is excited to see how some of the pieces to Caldwell's puzzle start to come together, especially on offense.
"We have some shooters in Forrest Smith, George Tarlas and Sam Briseno that can stretch the floor, as well as some bigs with length like Gary Willcutt, Corbin Beets and Braden Swanson that can finish around the rim," Harrsion said.
That said, Harrison is implementing a new system, so there could be some growing pains. But once that system is in place, Harrison is optimistic: We hope to improve on our ball movement and spacing, he said.
On the defensive side of the court opposing offenses will have to see the basket through some trees.
"Kyle Jerome and Alex Herrera-Gallegos are both great post defenders," Harrison said. "Our size gives us a great chance on the boards."
So, expect some growing pains, but also expect Caldwell to be competitive in Harrison's first season. Also, expect Harrison to enjoy the ride.
"The competitiveness ... and industriousness that this team has will make coaching a group like this memorable," he said.
