There is one key word surrounding the Ririe boys basketball program this season.
Potential.
Head Coach Eric Torgerson looks to find ways to best utilize the talent at his disposal this year and turn around the fortunes of a program that finished 5-17 last season.
The backcourt looks to be solid, with senior Kobe Nelson back along with junior Andy Bowden. Nelson will man much of the scoring load, while Bowden will handle point guard duties.
With the talent on the guard-line, Torgerson expects to be able to push the tempo on the offensive end.
“We are built with more offensive weapons and can score from more areas this season,” said Torgerson. “We want quick transition points, but we are still learning how to calm down and execute the half-court offense when quick transition points are limited.”
Jake Wilson, who the head coach described as the “heart and soul” of the team last season, has graduated, leaving 6’6” junior center Matthew Johnson in a position to see plenty of minutes this year.

“We have better athletes with better defensive potential, as that is our greatest weakness,” said Torgerson. “We have the physical tools to defend better, but defending smart is our goal. We had too many defensive letdowns last year.”
To be successful this year, the Bulldogs will rely on the defensive side of the floor first.
“If we play to our defensive potential we will finish strong and near the top of our league,” said Torgerson.
Ririe finds itself in the 2A Nuclear Conference, with Firth having held a stranglehold over the title for much of the last decade. Fellow conference foe West Jefferson also showed plenty of improvement last season, something the Bulldogs will now hope to replicate in their new campaign.
