Lewiston coach Jayson Ulrich has the challenge of helping his Bengals grow from a nine-win team in 2014-15. The upshot is he has plenty of pieces to work with.
The Bengals have quality returning talent, headlined by returning all-conference junior forward Trystan Bradley. Guards Dalton Stamper, Michael Murphy and Braeden Wilson also return to give Lewiston plenty of experience ahead of the new season. Wilson is expected to be an impact player for the Bengals as a sophomore in 2015-16.
Lewiston has decent depth but it’s going to take some time to get some of the new players up to speed. All season, but especially in the beginning stages, the Bengals will have to do it with defense. The good news is Bradley guards the rim with the best of them, averaging 5 blocks a night over the course of last season. Paint presence won’t be an issue, but inexperience on the perimeter will test the Bengals early.
Likewise, offensively the game plan will center around Bradley and working inside-out with Lewiston’s athletic guards. Junior forward Colton Richardson could shoulder some of the load as well.
They’ll miss graduated point guard Lincoln Carter but junior KeeShawn Clarke is ready to step in and make the position his own. Turnovers were a problem in 2014-15, and Ulrich said that’ll have to be fixed this season in order to be competitive in a perennially tough conference.
The outlook for Lewiston is pretty straightforward: Bradley is the headliner, but the Bengals will have to solidly balance the scoring and defensive loads in supporting roles for the team to succeed in 2015-16.
