Camas County has nipped at the heels of the teams above them in the Northside Conference the last couple of years, but this figures to be a rebuilding season in Fairfield.
The Mushers return some quality in the form of senior forward Erick Peterson and junior swingman Austin Burns, though they’ll miss the ball skill and athletic ability of departed senior Isaac Simon. During this adjustment period Camas County will look to focus on paint presence on offense. Peterson and K.C. Hainline provide some size in the post and will look to complement that with outside shooting from Burns to give the Mushers an inside-out threat and provide a little floor balance. The key to making it all work will be discipline and patience in the offensive set, moving the ball around until the right shot opens up.
Defensively Camas County should be able to stick with its man-to-man defense, mixing in some more pressure and full-court press in order to utilize quickness and force more turnovers. As long as the Mushers can ratchet up the intensity and pressure without sacrificing execution and discipline, this should be a strength for Camas County this season.
Third-year coach Jamon Frostenson says defense will be the key for the Mushers this season, as they look to get closer to within touching distance of the top of the Northside Conference. That’ll be made more difficult by the fact that just two teams from the league will get to the state tournament, but if the Mushers can play defense and get enough on the offensive end of the floor, there may be some things for conference rivals to at least think about down the stretch.
