After a two-and-out performance at the state tournament a year ago, the Challis boys basketball team has the taste for better things in the 2015-16 season.
There will need to be some subtle tweaks to the setup, but otherwise the Vikings look to be in good shape going forward as they try to get back to state. Challis graduated key player Brandon Hamilton, but the Vikings have quality still in the cupboard with junior forward Tristan Stillwaugh and senior point guard Scott Farr. Those two and newcomer forward Will Millick will combine to forge an offensive trio that could cause opponents problem.
Where things went wrong for Challis last season was in the ball-care department, with turnovers and poor shooting being issues that will need to improve in 2015-16.
Defensively Farr can be a shut-down defender, and Stillwaugh is a shot-blocker and rebounder in the paint. The focus this season is on overall team defense, though, with help-side rotation and communication being key.
Beyond that, intensity and a dedication to cleaning up the glass at both ends will be something that needs to be improved upon. Challis has some work to do to get this team to blend, but if the Vikings can get it done by the time the district tournament rolls around, Farr is confident the team will be a state-caliber one when all is said and done. If the team can jell and play with the requisite focus and desire, Farr says, Challis will be right in the mix for a state tournament berth.
