Having been highly competitive in the higher classification of 2A in 2013-2014, the Oakley Hornets enter the 1AD1 ranks this season looking to add to that success.

Third year Head Coach Travis Noble’s team was within striking distance of a win in 19 of their 21 games, however those two blowouts came at the most crucial point in the season, falling 50-37 to Declo and 50-27 to Valley in district tournament play to end the year.

Overall the Hornets went 15-6, at one point knocking off the eventual 2A state runner-up Declo Hornets 44-40 at home.

With the previous campaign not ending the way they would have hoped, Oakley looks ahead to the new year with plenty of promise.

Two relatively young playmakers will be asked to emerge as the leaders for the new-look team, having lost some starters to graduation including Mark Alves. The youth infusion will be led by sophomore guard Hewstyn Beck and junior guard Jordan Cranney. Both are strong ball-handlers who should have plenty of opportunities to feed Kwayd Wadsworth and Caleb Nyman down-low.

Wadsworth is also a standout on the football field for the Hornets.

Having experienced success last season, the hopes are high for the upcoming year.

“The program has been established and expectations are clear to the team,” said Noble.

Similar to their counterparts on the gridiron, the results for the Hornets should continue to improve having made the move to 1AD1 this season along with Valley. Both teams will play in the 1A Snake River Conference.

The team will also make use of tight-knit relationships between all players on the unit.

“This will be a team that plays with intensity and passion, as well as a sense of togetherness. Fans can expect to see a team that is structured and well disciplined,” added Noble.

Oakley can be expected to be a hard-nosed basketball team that relies on defense and smart possessions on the offensive side of the ball to control the pace of the game.

Last season the Hornets allowed 41 points or more in just four of their games, with two of those coming in the tough stretch to end the season against Valley and Declo, two strong basketball teams that advanced to the state tournament in the Treasure Valley.

It will take more of the same for Oakley to be successful in their move down from 2A to 1AD1 for the 2014-2015 basketball season.
