Madison vs. Bonneville:The Bees edged the Bobcats 31-21 behind the efforts of Lincoln Clayton and Tanner Smith. Those two players are the key cogs for Bonneville’s offense. The question still looms: what about Bonneville’s defense? They are a young group, but seem to be gelling. Madison is a very young team overall that seems to be coming together too. Watch out for the Bobcats in the coming seasons.
Next Games: Bonneville takes on rival Hillcrest in the annual “Civil War”. Madison hosts upstart Idaho Falls.
Firth vs. Malad: The Cougars took the lead for good on a Connor Montgomery touchdown plunge late in the 4th quarter. The Dragons, however, showed how improved they are this season. Any game with Firth is a tough game and Malad showed that they can make some noise, especially come playoff time. The defense is solid for Firth and if they could add one more weapon on the offensive side, they could be more potent.
Next Games: Firth hosts South Fremont, while Malad travels to Montpelier for a date with the Bear Lake Bears.
Rigby vs. Preston: The Trojans are surprising everyone around the state, as they are off to a 3-0 start with wins over Hillcrest, Pocatello, and now Preston. While Rigby hasn’t scored more than 19 points per game, the defense has been steady. The offense will continue to develop as the season progresses. Preston is an improving team and can cause problems if you take them lightly.
Next Games: Rigby hosts Skyline while Preston has a bye.
Snake River vs.Sugar-Salem: One thing we learned from this game was that both teams’ defenses are very good. Another thing we learned: you HAVE to convert PAT opportunities. Sugar-Salem’s 2-pt conversion attempt proved to be the difference as Snake River held off the Diggers for a 7-6 win. Key mistakes by both sides on offense coupled by the good defensive effort kept this game close. The question is: how will this style of play hold up come time for conference matchups?
Next Games: Snake River has a bye week, while Sugar-Salem travels to Arimo to take on Marsh Valley.
Troy vs. Kamiah: The Kubs are having a down year. They are an extremely young team after graduating most of last year’s state championship squad. Troy, on the other hand, looks like the team to beat in the White Pine League. Can anyone stop the Trojans?
Next Games: Troy has a bye week, while Kamiah hosts Wallace.
Skyline vs. Century: I think it’s fair to say that after Century nearly beat Highland in the Dome in Week One, most people selected the Diamondbacks to take care of business against the Skyline Grizzlies. Not so fast said Zak Bennett and the Grizz, who stole the game from Century with a 22-21 victory. Skyline improves to 2-1 while Century drops to 0-2. It looks like Grizz coach Scott Berger finally has the right man at QB for his spread offense. Don’t count out the Diamondbacks though: they will be in the conference championship and state playoff discussion in the 4A classification.
Next Games: Skyline travels to Rigby, while opens up the conference schedule with a game on the road against Blackfoot.
