Two weeks ago, I picked the state champs from the girls tourney and I got three of them correct. It’s time to try again, but this time with the boys. Feel free to make your picks, as well.
5A: The Borah Lions are the top ranked team at22-1. Since they dominated the teams from District III, let’s look at some other contenders. Post Falls has the next best record at 19-3, with Couer d’Alene at 16-6. I cannot pick against the favorite here, so I am going with the Borah Lions and their excellent coach, Cara Cady, to win it all over the Post Falls Trojans.
4A: If we look at records alone, the two best teams, Twin Falls and Rigby, are both 21-2. Jerome is not far behind at 20-5. Madison is always a tough team at state, so this division could be won by many different teams. I’ll go with the Twin Falls Bruins over the Rigby Trojans.
3A: This is another division that has many teams with similar records. St Maries is ranked #1, but Kellogg and Weiser both received some first place votes. I am going with St Maries meeting Weiser for the title, with the Lumberjacks prevailing over the Wolverines.
2A: The top ranked team here is the Cole Valley Chargers, who won league, but lost District to the New Plymouth Pilgrims. Firth is also an excellent team, and I think the winner will be one of these teams. If they both win, the Chargers and the Cougars will meet in the second round. The winner should meet New Plymouth in the finals. I am going with the Pilgrims over the Cougars to win it all. (Yes, I teach at New Plymouth so call me a Homer!!)
1AD1: The lone undefeated team in all of the boys’ division is the Genesee Bulldogs. Their first game is a tough one against Liberty Charter, which is20-2. If they get by them, they will win it all. I’m picking the Bulldogs to compete their perfect season with a victory over the Notus Pirates.
1AD2: This may be the toughest division to pick. I’ll go with the title game featuring the Nezperce Indians playing the Sho-Ban Chiefs. In the end, it will be the Indians prevailing over the Chiefs.
So there you have it. Good luck to all of the teams.
