The Albertsons Big Deal of the Week is a new addition to IdahoSports.com in which student-athletes who excel in the classroom and competitively are selected on a weekly basis to be featured on the site. Each recipient of this weekly honor receives a $100 Albertsons gift card and is featured as a top story on IdahoSports.com.

Our second selection is Adam Elorrieta of Valley High School. Elorrieta, a 3.47 GPA student, is an Idaho State University commit for track and field. He is an eight-time state champion with wins in the 800 meters, 1600 medley relay, 4x400 and the high jump. He also has four school and two state records. He credits his two older brothers for helping turn him into the athlete he is today.

Tell us a little bit about yourself:
I am a senior at Valley High School in Hazelton. Valley is a pretty small school in the 1AD1 classification. I am an eight-time state champion in track and field. I have won the 800 meters three times, 1600 medley relay three times, 4x400 once, and high jump once. I also have four school and two state meet records.

Do you have a nickname? If so, how did you get it?
White Rice and Arroz. I’m not really sure how I got the nickname but the first time I can recall someone calling me that was my friend Julian. I’m pretty sure he called me that a few years ago playing summer baseball.

What is your favorite sport to watch? Participate in?
Not my favorite sport, but my favorite event to watch is the 4x400. My favorite sport is the high jump.

As a student-athlete, which is harder - being a student, or being an athlete? Why?
Definitely being a student. I have to keep my grades up and make sure I’m keeping up on work before I even think about competing.

Overall GPA:
3.47

What is the best thing you have learned from playing sports in high school?
Being able to admit that I do things wrong sometimes and then listening to my coaches or teammates to figure out what I need to do to fix those wrongs.

Favorite high school memory, so far?
Probably when I won state high jump last year. Not only did I win, but I set the state meet record for the 1A classification. That was definitely by far the best.

Who is your favorite teacher? Why?
If I said anyone other than my mom I think I’d get in trouble.

What kind of car gets you around town?
A 2005 Ford Expedition.

Cat person or dog person?
Dog.

Favorite food?
Steak or spaghetti.

You have an entire weekend with no plans. What do you do?
I’d probably just stay home and play Apex Legends or NBA 2K.

If you could meet anyone, living or dead, who would you meet?
Chris Paul. He’s my favorite NBA player.

What is something most people do not know about you?
I’m hypoglycemic which means I have low blood sugar and it really gets out of hand if I don’t keep my nutrition up.

What celebrity would play you if they made a movie about your life?
Ryan Reynolds.

What was the last song you listened to?
Out for the Night by 21 Savage.

What are your plans after high school (college, work, etc.)?
I’m going to go to Idaho State University and run track and field there. Right now my declared major is secondary physical education teaching and coaching.

When you "grow up" what is your idea of the perfect job?
I want to come back to Valley and teach P.E. My P.E. teacher now plans to retire when I get done with college.

What is the best advice you have ever received and from who?
I’m not really sure but I grew up with two older brothers who were always bigger and faster than me when I was younger and if it wasn’t for the constant hazing, chasing and wrestling matches, I probably wouldn’t be as fast or athletic as I am today.

Any shoutouts:
-My best friend Ben who is currently serving a mission over in the Philippines.
-My siblings Kami, Doug, Mike and Mandi for being great supporters.
-My parents for always overhyping me and making me believe in myself.
-My coaches Mr. Hunter and Mr. Jarvis for helping in cross country and track.
