Last season was the first season ever for Genesis Prep Jaguars. The new school, located in Post Falls, made some noise in their inaugural season battling the North Star 1A D2 opponents. The Jaguars, led by second-year coach, Debbie Holte and co-head coach Mike Couch, came one game away, a close game, a battle down to the final buzzer, away from qualifying for the State Tournament.
In their second season, everything will be exactly the same for the Jaguars who return everyone except one player. They graduated zero seniors. The only player lost from last season is Shaye Schreibis who decided to be home-schooled this season and must return to play for the school within her district. The rest of the returners are all sophomores.
Rachel Schroeder and Bella Murketete both received North Star All-Conference honors a season ago and look to duplicate it again this season. They are joined by more depth and teammates that have grown and matured. The Jaguars are more experienced as sophomores.
The scoring comes from two main areas-post Bella Murketete and guard Josie Scribner. Coach Holte beams about the talent level and scoring potential of Murketete and Scribner, but looks to create more balance with the rest of the players.
The Jaguars are tall, athletic, and have more depth than a year ago, but will need to improve their defensive pressure. They will need the pressure to be strong when the Jaguars go up against a very tough league opponent in Lakeside. Lakeside is the team that kept Genesis Prep out of the State tournament last year. Expect each regular season game to be full of high energy and very competitive. If both teams are left standing after the post-season begins and it all comes down to one game to get in to the State tournament, throw everything out the window and expect an atmosphere unlike any other.
The Jaguars will be hungry to improve past their last season success.
