Basketball is a team game.

Just ask Weiser head coach Nick Reed, whose team last season won the District III 3A championship and advanced to the State Tournament. He was named the Snake River Valley Conference Coach of the Year and five of his players received some form All-Conference honors.

It was a good year on the court for the Wolverines. But … there’s always a “but,” isn’t there … four of those five girls are gone. First-team All-Conference selections Paige Brown and Emily Gluch. Second-teamer Ali Reed and honorable-mention Coco Larsen all graduated, leaving Reed to plug a lot of holes going into this season.

The early results could be deemed predictable – the Wolverines won a couple and lost a couple to start the season – as a new team is built and bonded. The lone holdover, honors-wise, is senior CJ Davis, who was an honorable-mention All-SRV performer last season.

So Reed will turn to youngsters like sophomore Abbey Shirts, who scored a team-high 18 points in an overtime win at New Plymouth, and Shelbie Allen, whose eight points in the same game included a game-tying layup at the buzzer.

The team isn’t all youngsters. Reed has four seniors. Besides CJ Davis, he’s got Katie Davis, Jasmine Rios and Dixie George. But it is a relatively young roster overall. The varsity squad features six juniors, two sophomores (Shirts and Allen) and freshman Marissa Moyle.

If the youth meshes with the veteran players on the roster – which doesn’t always happen overnight – Weiser should be in position to once again reach the State tournament. The key, as many coaches are sure to point out, is to be playing your best basketball in January, not November, to carry positive momentum into the postseason. The 3A SRV doesn’t appear to have a runaway favorite this season, so growth, improvement and development in November and December will serve teams well as February (District tournaments and the State tournament) approaches.

Three teams represented District III in the 3A State Tournament last spring. Weiser won the District title by beating Homedale and Emmett, who has since moved up to the 4A classification, won the state play-in game over Priest River to advance to State as well.

The Wolverines will still face the now-4A Huskies on December 13, a good challenge for Reed’s squad. Weiser will also close the regular season with three consecutive conference games at home, which could be huge in terms of seeding and matchups for District tournament, when they welcome in Parma (Jan. 21), Fruitland (Jan. 24) and Payette (Jan. 27).
