With one state championship under their belt, the Mountain View Mavericks have one goal in mind, get back to state.

If they can do so, it will be the fourth trip in the last seven years and the second consecutive tournament appearance.

Jon Netleton’s squad went 14-12 last season but lost its first two games in the state tournament, going two-and-out.

Damen Thacker, a First Team All-SIC selection is lost to graduation.

However, six seniors return to a Mountain View team that has high expectations for itself.

“He had great athleticism and had the ability to score,” Netleton said.

Replacing Thacker at point guard will be senior Drew Smart, who will be new to the varsity setting unlike six of his teammates.

Senior guard Cam Howard picked up an All-Conference Honorable Mention last season and will be joined by Tyler Brotherson, Brandon Caruso and Spencer Erickson in the back court.

Seniors, Juan Aguilar and Max Matthews will bring up the wings as well as junior Jalen Galloway.

Without a returning post player, the Mavs will look to use their motion offense to find open looks. But since they don’t have a true post player, they will have to make shots and be scrappy on the boards.

Mountain View plays tight, man-to-man defense that surrendered 50.9 points per game last season as the Mavs allowed 40 or less points on six different occasions, including a season-low 16 points to Columbia on Jan. 5.

While the strategy has been proven to work, it can get the Mavs in foul trouble, which is a point of emphasis for Netleton coming into this season.

If Mountain View can knock down the inevitable open looks that a motion offense provides, continue to play stingy defense while limiting fouls and clean the glass, there is no reason they won’t be playing basketball in the Ford Idaho Center the first weekend of March.
