Team Preview

Written by: David Bashore

Tri-Valley’s aiming to reinvent the wheel in 2015-16. It has a new coach, and a new system, as it tries to maximize its talent in search of a sixth straight state tournament berth.

The Titans return four players, including three seniors: guards Samantha Gibbons, Kenzee Haubrich and Dystinee Miller. Point guard Valery Kindall, a junior, also is back. Tri-Valley has four underclassmen coming up as well, including three forwards that could provide balance to the floor.

Kindall is a good ball-handler, who can facilitate the offense but also keep defenses honest by loading up on her own shot from the perimeter. The four experienced players are adept at running through Tri-Valley’s offense, though doing so confidently and with great communication is a point of emphasis this season.

Defensively the Titans are diversifying, incorporating more man-to-man defense after running a zone for most of last season. This should work well with the team’s overall speed and positioning, though it will remain a work in progress. Switches and help defense need to still be worked on, as does communication.

First-year coach Melissa Dunham says she sees her team coming together and are starting to play as one. Combining teamwork and individual skills is something that could see the Titans make a resurgence this season.
