Team Preview

The Minico Lady Spartans are the talk of the Great Basin Conference. After advancing to the final day of The Real Dairy Shootout last season, without one of their better players (injury), the Spartans return everyone from last year and the goals are lofty for this team.

Head Coach Terry Merrill, in his 5th season at the helm, might have the best team in the conference. When asked about who the returning “impact players” were going to be this season, his answer read like a laundry list. Seniors Macie Merrill, Sadie Curiel, Diana Clapier, Shaylee Gilchrist, and Adrianna Peralez will lead this extremely talented group of “seasoned” players. The Spartans are happy to have Peralez healthy as she was lost for a significant part of the season last year, including the state tournament. Add to the mix two juniors who were 1st team all-conference last year (Jilian Gilchrist and Tayla Sayer) and the Spartans have offensive threats up and down the roster.

The Spartans are one of those teams who can score in bunches. Often times, they will put 4 or 5 guards on the floor and make you defend the perimeter as everyone on the roster can shoot the three. “We have 10 girls on our varsity roster this year who love to play basketball and all can shoot the ball from long range,” says Merrill. Last year, six of the returning players were the high point scorers in at least 2 games last season.

However, with a guard dominated team, the Spartans will have to deal with the elephant in the room—the paint. Last season, Minico struggled to defend teams who had a true post player in their lineup. That is something that Merrill hopes to improve upon and with a healthy Peralez and some strong team defense.

The Lady Spartans have a lot of expectations this year and are the clear favorite to win the Great Basin Conference.
