Few teams may look as different from year to year as Declo might in 2015-16. The Hornets were in the mix for state tournament berths the last several seasons with post presences, solid defense and low-scoring battles. This season, however, size gives way to speed as Declo might need to outscore teams more often than grinding out defensive victories. Losing a lot of seniors, Declo will rely on a returning trio of players to drive the team forward this season.
Offensively the Hornets will make a pivot from being more forward-oriented to utilizing the guard line more this season, as quickness and speed are greater assets to this bunch than the half-court sets of previous years. Aubrey Garner can provide a post presence but the team in general is more about quickness than size. Setting screens and shot selection are two points of emphasis going forward this season.
On the defensive end, Declo will look to employ perimeter pressure from Kelsie Hamilton and Paige Ramsey to force turnovers before opponents can set up their offense. That would also shore up the rebounding department, which is one spot in which the Hornets would love to improve in 2015-16.
Declo’s path to the state tournament is far more straightforward than most: the Hornets share a conference with Wendell, which basically boils the entire season down to a best-of-3 at the conclusion of the regular season. The two regular-season and at least two postseason matchups will decide the entirety of the season, so stakes are incredibly high and makes the games must-watch.
For the Hornets to take advantage this season, they need to be more fluid offensively while keeping things up on the defensive end of the floor. If that happens Declo could be back in the state tournament.
