The Columbia Wildcats like their crosstown rival Nampa will be making the jump from the 4A Southern Idaho Conference to the 5A Southern Idaho Conference (Pod B) to start off the 2014-15 season. In addition to the change in conference, Columbia will also be introducing a new coach this season in Jeff Hoseley. C

oach Hoseley inherits a team that went 5-17 (4-14 in conference) in the 4A SIC, and hopes he can help the Wildcats become competitive at the 5A level.

Coach Hoseley has been out of coaching the past few seasons, but has experience coaching in the 5A Southern Idaho Conference (head coach at Meridian High School for 4 years).

“I have been out of the SIC, out of coaching, for a while and I am excited to have the chance to do it again. Top that off with being in a position to take a school from 4A to 5A, what is more exciting than that,” said Coach Hoseley on his new head coaching job.

Returning for Columbia this season is senior post, Luke Vaarstra, senior guard, Adam Mansfield, and senior guard Dylan Brown. Coach Hoseley will be leaning heavily on these three varsity lettermen, to lead a young, inexperienced group, into a new conference and hopes they can lead Columbia into a winning record this season. Notable losses for the Wildcats this season will be leading rebounder and first-team all 4A-SIC Mogga Lado.

In the most recent seasons, the Wildcats have struggled mightily against 5A SIC competition finishing 0-8 against SIC schools. Columbia will have an uphill climb just to be competitive in a very balanced 5A SI conference, but will have a roster that has quickness, athleticism, and the ability to attack the basket to get easy points.

“We will have opportunities offensively this season, but if we can take advantage of those opportunities, limit our turnovers, and make free throws we will have the opportunity to be competitive on a nightly basis,” said Coach Hoseley.

The outlook for this season for Columbia is cloudy, but as they gain experience in their new system and conference, look for these Wildcats to be playing their best basketball around district tournament time.

GAMES TO WATCH: Columbia has two natural rivals in Nampa and Skyview that they will only play once this season. December 4th, 2014 they will host Skyview and January 16, 2015 they will welcome Nampa.
