Rivals Become Friends.....For a Day

The Challis Vikings don't play on Friday but they'll be rowdy fans of their Rocky Mountain Conference rivals from North Gem High School.  That's because a North Gem victory over Rockland would leave all three teams - North Gem, Rockland, and Challis - with matching 3-1 conference records, leading to tiebreakers.  A similar situation could unfold in the 1A Whitepine League where a Genesee win over Deary on Friday coupled with a Timberline win over Lewis County would leave Genesee, Deary, and Timberline all at 2-1 in league play.  If Rockland and Deary win, however, they're the outright conference champs and headed to the 1A state playoffs.  Just to throw in an additional what-if: should Genesee defeat Deary and Lewis County knock off Timberline, then Genesee is the 1A Whitepine champ.

Measured Up

Going into Friday's game against top-ranked Kendrick, Logos head coach Nick Holloway said it was a great opportunity to measure the growth of his young program.  The Knights' first season of varsity football was 2021, winning three of nine games.  The team won three games again in 2022 before going 9-1 and falling in the state semifinals to eventual state champion Butte County in 2023.  That set the stage for this season, where Logos fell in its opening game (again to Butte County) but has not lost since, winning seven in a row, including Friday's 30-18 triumph over Kendrick.  The Knights scored four touchdowns in the win, each scored by a different player: Lucius Comis, Seamus Wilson, Asaph Grieser, and Ryan Daniels.  The Knights host Potlatch on Friday before the 2A state playoffs begin.

The "Why"

I met a gentleman named Don Davis on the sidelines in Horseshoe Bend on Friday night.  He was there to see his grandson, Salmon River junior Riley Davis.  Grandpa suffers from Macular Degeneration, so his eyes aren't quite as sharp as they were in his days as a football and wrestling coach in Gooding.  But he was there, following the action, looking and listening intently, telling stories of his days as a coach, telling me about his son (Donavun Davis, the wrestling coach at nearby Garden Valley) and, most importantly, talking about his grandson, who scored the game's first touchdown for the visitors.  The moments.  The memories.  That's why we do this.  To experience the thrill and the joy.  As the clock wound down, Grandpa Davis said with a smile, "It's a great night for a football game."  Salmon River defeated Horseshoe Bend, 30-22.
