How are we already done with Week 4 of the volleyball season?! This season, like most, is going by super fast and now we sadly only have six weeks left in the 2023-24 Idaho high school season. In these next six weeks, we will see only a couple of tournaments and the dwindling number of conference matchups before district tournaments start.
The seasons go by so fast in the moment but these are moments that last a lifetime! For example, this season is building into one of those years you'll never forget if you're a fan of the Bonneville Bees! They are the winners of their own Bonneville Classic tournament, which took place this past weekend. To win the Classic this year, the Bees took on many top teams in the state, including: Pocatello, Fruitland, Idaho Falls and Blackfoot.
The Bees are lead by seniors Kaylie Kofe, Ava Arfmann, Hailey Hatch, Aspen Anderson, Kaiya Coles and Adi Arave. These six seniors continue to show their leadership and experience as they all have heavily contribued to their astounding 20-1 (including tournament matches) record on the season.
Bonneville always has their name in the volleyball world as they've won many state titles and continue to have many athletes go on to play at the the next level. This season, the Bees are steady and ready just like one of their leaders, Kaylie Kofe, who we fortunately get to see shine one more time. She currently leads all of Idaho in hitting percentage and aces this season. She is also in the top five for assists.
Kaylie is the real deal. She has been a leader for the Bees since she was a freshman and she is a player to watch now and in the future! She is energetic, influential, and a workhorse. She will do anything asked of her and more. Every year she's taken on more and more responsibilities for her team and her hard work is always showing! Kaylie is headed to Utah State to play volleyball next year and we are so excited for her future! Good luck to you and your teammates this season, Kayle. Keep going girls!
Bonneville is also blessed with another fearless leader, who has been leading them for almost twenty years now! We are so grateful to have head coach Chantal McMurtrey. Coach McMurtrey holds an impressive record of over 550 wins with less than 160 losses during her career at Bonneville. She has been leading the Bees since 2005 and during this time period, Bonneville has been busy building a volleyball empire. Chantal and the Bees have won 13 district championships, made 16 state tournament appearances, qualified for 11 state finals matches, and won five state championships. Coach McMurtrey also holds five Coach of the Year awards for Idaho. What an amazing leader the Bees have!
This week, be on the lookout for the only Idaho team attending one of the nation's top tournaments. The Skyview Hawks will be attending the Durango Fall Classic, presented by ASICS. Top teams from all over the country will join them!
In addition to Bonneville, Skyview is the other top 4A Idaho program currently. The Hawks are not a new name to the scene as they are the defending 4A state champions and the year before that, they were the 5A state champs! The past two seasons, Skyview has been led by their two Alex's (Acevedo and Bower), and we loved having those two work together and accomplish so much.
Now that Alex Acevedo is playing at the University of Oregon, Skyview is still a fully loaded team with Bower and Bellamie Beus leading the way. Alex Bower is a seasoned setter who will be headed to BYU in Provo, Utah to join her sisters (Whitney and Eden) on the Cougars' volleyball team. Alex is a well-rounded player who helps all hitters with her bettering of every ball and ball placement. The Bower sisters have created a volleyball dynasty from Idaho and this year, younger sister and freshman Lizzie Bower also joined the Hawks to help them soar to more heights!
Bellamie Beus is just a sophomore but continues to show why she is and will continue to be a player to watch. She is currently second in hitting percentage in Idaho and she also leads in total kills. She is a strong outside hitter and we are happy to say, as she is only a sophomore, we will get to see her grow and dominate for two more seasons after this one!
Way to represent Idaho, Skyview! We are so proud of you! We will be rooting for you this week as you travel to Las Vegas!
