Last year, the Idaho High School Activities Association began a partnership with MaxPreps when it comes to IHSAA postseason events.  In the past, a teams' positioning on state tournament brackets had been predetermined, which sometimes led to unbalanced draws and less-than-compelling championship matchups.

In 2020, the IHSAA used MaxPreps, and specifically their in-house rankings system, to assign Class 4A, 3A, 2A and 1AD1 football teams a seed based upon their performance.  After that trial run, the same rankings system is being used for soccer, volleyball and basketball this year as well.

Over the past several weeks, we have received multiple inquiries from fans, coaches and administrators alike.  Their question: How exactly are the MaxPreps rankings calculated?

While we still don't have a definitive answer on the formula that MaxPreps uses, IdahoSports.com broadcaster and Jerome Athletic Director Scott Burton did some research into the MaxPreps process.  He shared what he found on this week's episode of the Magic Valley Prepcast.
