Welcome to "Heavy Hitters", where each week, we'll highlight the top hitting performances across baseball and softball diamonds around the state of Idaho.

We will select one hitting performance for each day of the week.  Think of it as the best hitting line for that particular day.

Because the season began on a Wednesday, this weekly rundown will cover the previous week's Wednesday through Tuesday action.

If you'd like to nominate a Heavy Hitter, send an email to brandon@idahosports.com.

Without further ado, let's get to it!

BASEBALL

Quinn Hood, Fruitland (Wednesday, April 16)

Hood helped lead Fruitland to a 24-1 Snake River Valley Conference win over McCall-Donnelly.  The senior went 3-for-3 with a home run and two doubles, and added five RBIs and two runs scored.

Logan Carpenter, Potlatch (Thursday, April 17)

Carpenter ripped two home runs as part of a 3-for-3 effort in a 12-1 Whitepine League win over Genesee.  Carpenter also doubled and reached on a hit-by-pitch.  He totaled three RBIs and three runs scored.

Chance Martell, Homedale (Friday, April 18)

Martell went 4-for-5 with three triples in Homedale's 22-9 win over New Plymouth.  Martell finished with a walk, five RBIs, five runs scored and two stolen bases, as well.

David Goicoa, Grangeville (Saturday, April 19)

Goicoa laced two home runs as part of a 4-for-4 day in Grangeville's 19-0 Central Idaho League win over Priest River.  Goicoa also walked, and finished with seven RBIs and three runs scored.

Kace Malstrom, Sugar-Salem (Monday, April 21)

Malmstrom hit for the cycle in Sugar-Salem's 20-1 win over Mountain Rivers Conference rival Teton.  In five at-bats, Malmstrom notched two singles, a double, a triple and a home run.  He added five RBIs and four runs to his ledger.

Hayden Nahay, Skyline (Tuesday, April 22)

Skyline outlasted Rigby in a slugfest, 17-12.  Nahay was a big part of the Grizzly effort, finishing 2-for-2 with a home run, five RBIs, four runs and three walks.

SOFTBALL

Lauren Colson, Cole Valley Christian (Wednesday, April 16)

Colson homered three times in the Chargers' 28-1 win over Payette in Snake River Valley Conference play.  Colson went 4-for-5 and also reached base on a hit-by-pitch.  She finished with six RBIs, three runs scored and a stolen base.

Makinzie Nelson, Wood River (Thursday, April 17)

Wood River swept Minico in a Great Basin Conference doubleheader.  In the first game, Nelson hit for the cycle, but that's not the performance we're highlighting here.  It was the second game, a 23-6 win for the Wolverines, where Nelson really erupted.  Nelson went 4-for-4 with three home runs and a double, seven RBIs and three runs scored.

Brooke Austin, Mountain View (Friday, April 18)

Our third consecutive three-homer game comes from Mountain View's Brooke Austin, who went 3-for-3 with three round-trippers, six RBIs and three runs scored, as the Mavericks defeated Centennial 13-3 in Southern Idaho Conference action.

Haylee Smith, Ririe (Saturday, April 19)

At the Scott Ray Tournament in Malad, Ririe defeated American Falls 10-5, and Smith went 2-for-2 in the win.  You might think: so what? Lots of hitters go 2-for-2.  But both of Smith's hits were home runs, and she added three RBIs and two runs scored to her ledger.

Mariah Longest, Wilder (Monday, April 21)

Pardon the pun, but this Wilder Wildcat ran "wild" in a 21-5 Western Idaho Conference win over Rimrock.  Longest went 2-for-2 with a single and a double.  She also reached base three additional times; twice on hit-by-pitches and once via walk.  It led to five RBIs and three runs scored, but the reason Longest made our list this week was the eight stolen bases she swiped.

Makenna Shamy, Skyview (Tuesday, April 22)

Shamy went 2-for-4 with a pair of home runs on her way to six RBIs and two runs scored, as Skyview defeated Southern Idaho Conference rival Columbia 13-0.  While she was hitting two homers, Shamy also pitched a perfect game, and became the first player this season to be named "Primetime PItcher" and "Heavy Hitter" on the same day.
