If you happened to only catch half of Saturday's 1AD1 boys basketball championship game, you probably came away with a conclusion that differed from reality, for the showdown between Lakeside and Lapwai truly was a game of two halves.
Ultimately, third-seeded Lakeside held on for an 81-79 overtime triumph over top-seeded Lapwai, snapping the Wildcats' 62-game winning streak and ending the Wildcats' two-year reign atop the 1AD1 classification.
In half number one, fans were stunned to see Lakeside with a commanding 44-22 halftime lead. Many thought that Lakeside had the offensive firepower to hang with Lapwai, but no one thought that Lapwai would be so cold in a state title game. In the first half, Lakeside shot 68% from the floor while Lapwai shot 25%.
But in the second half, Lapwai caught lightning in a bottle. A 26-8 third quarter helped Lapwai climb back into the game, and the two sides traded blows throughout the fourth, setting the stage for a wild finish.
With the Knights ahead 65-63 with forty seconds remaining, Lakeside senior point guard Vander Brown stole the ball from Lapwai's Terrell Ellenwood-Jones and took it the other way for a layup and a 67-63 lead. The gamble was risky, as Brown was playing with four fouls.
With 13 seconds remaining, Lapwai's Ahlius Yearout was fouled by Lakeside freshman Tyson Charley. Charley fouled out on the play, and Yearout sank both free throws to make the score 67-65.
On the ensuing play, Ellenwood-Jones fouled Lakeside's Liam Hendrickx. It marked the fifth foul for Ellenwood-Jones, and Hendrickx made the first to make the score 68-65 Lakeside. But his second shot spun out, Lapwai rebounded the ball, and Hendrickx attempted to foul Lapwai's Kase Wynott before he could attempt a game-tying three.
But Wynott alertly threw the ball up, and a shooting foul was called. Wynott sank all three free throws to send the game to overtime tied at 68-68.
Lakeside outscored Lapwai 13-10 in the extra session. Trailing 80-79 with ten seconds to play, Lakeside's Blaze Callahan stole the ball from Wynott and was fouled. Callahan sank one-of-two free throws with three seconds remaining to give the Knights a 81-79 lead. A last-ditch heave from Promise Shaul was short, and the upset was complete.
Brown finished with 29 points, nine rebounds, four assists and four steals, and was named IdahoSports.com Player of the Game.
Wynott led all scorers with 40 points. He also pulled down ten rebounds.
