Think of the girls basketball postseason like a large pot of boiling water. What little action we've had so far represents the initial stages of boiling. You might see a bubble here and there, but generally, there's not much action.
Tuesday night, then, represented the stage where there are multiple bubbles rising to the surface. They aren't coming with the full fury of a rapid boil yet, but at least we have something substantial to talk about.
Last night across the state, all of the favorites won at their respective District Tournaments. Some performances were more impressive than others, but at this point, all that counts is getting the 'W'.
The most exciting contest from last night's action came at the 1AD1 District 4 Tournament. Better known as the Snake River Conference, there have been six teams (Oakley, Raft River, Murtaugh, Carey, Lighthouse Christian and Shoshone) that have either led or were tied for the league title at some point this year.
The top three seeds (Oakley, Raft River and Murtaugh) all won easily over the six, seven and eight seeds (Shoshone, Glenns Ferry and Valley). But that four vs. five matchup was a doozy, as Carey welcomed in Lighthouse Christian and escaped with a 37-35 win.
For a long time, it appeared as if the Lions would score the road upset. Lighthouse took leads of 20-14 at halftime and 30-24 after the third quarter. But a 13-5 blitzkrieg in the fourth allowed Carey to earn the come-from-behind victory.
Carey was led by Jane Parke and Shayli Smith, who each scored 12 points. Lighthouse Christian's Jordan Wolverton led all scorers with 19.
The Panthers will now face top-seeded Oakley in the semifinals on Thursday at Jerome High School. Murtaugh and Raft River will meet in the other semi.
Carey's win isn't enough to move them into our projected bracket. District 4 will only send two teams to state, and for the time being, Oakley and Raft River still occupy those slots until someone can knock them off.
As a reminder, you can follow all of the district tournament action here. Teams will be seeded according to their MaxPreps rating.
