Listen to the weekly Idaho 8-Man PrepCast

Here are the top performers from this weekend's slate of Idaho 8-Man action.

1. Teague Matthews, Rockland

He's a bit of a unicorn, to say the least, at the 1A level.  A 6-foot-5 athlete with Division 1 interest, Matthews threw seven touchdown passes in Friday's win over Hagerman.  He also added 123 rushing yards, nine tackles and an interception on defense as the Bulldogs ready themselves for a big game at Castleford this week.

2. Jack Driskill, Logos

It was another big performance for the Knights' senior in the team's 40-14 win over a good Kamiah team.  Driskill had over 400 total yards, three passing touchdowns, and two rushing touchdowns in the win that boosted the Knights' early-season record to 3-0 overall and, more importantly, 2-0 in Whitepine League play.

3. Jack Clark, Potlatch

The team Logos is tied with at 2-0 in WPL action is Potlatch, who dispatched of Prairie in a big way Friday behind the play of Clark.  He ran for over 200 yards and four touchdowns and also threw for 129 yards and two more scores while corralling a pair of interceptions on defense for the Loggers, who have outscored their two opponents 124-14 through two games.

Honorable Mention:

Brody Westergard (Butte County)
Tyson Tupper (Camas County)
Tyler Thurston (Cascade)
Cache Keetch (Castleford)
Chase Sanroman (Clark Fork)
Nolan Hubbard (Deary)
Brody Torgerson (Dietrich)

Qwincy Hall (Lakeside)
Gage Crow (Lewis County)

Kofi Appiah (Mullan/St. Regis)
Soyer Young (Murtaugh)
Craig Yost (North Gem)
Kyler Robinson (Oakley)
Levi Gehring (Prairie)
Ronaldo Gomez (Rimrock)
Drake Jones (Valley)

Thimo, Thimo

What started as his head coach looking for him turned into a memorable moment for Garden Valley junior Thimo Benzinger.  An exchange student from Germany, Benzinger practiced kicking in order to be able to contribute to the team after Garden Valley's regular kicker, Payton Williamson, suffered a season-ending injury.  During Friday's win over Castleford, head coach Jason Yearsley called out, "Thimo, Thimo," to send him onto the field.  He promptly went in and successfully converted a point-after touchdown kick.  The players and the crowd picked up on it and began chanting his name every time it was time to kick.  End result - Benzinger went 6-for-6 on PAT kicks and also banged home a field goal.  Anyone know of another 8-man football game in Idaho where that happened?

Justice for Schrader

He shows up as an honorable mention this week but the fact of the matter is Lighthouse Christian senior Justice Schrader could be a 3-Star virtually every week.  Against Raft River on Friday, he threw for 389 yards and five scores (and also had an interception and two forced fumbles on defense.)  For the season, he's averaging nearly 300 yards per game passing and completing 62 percent of his tosses for 12 scores and no interceptions.  He leads the team in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns as well as he builds his All-State resume with a game at Carey coming up on Friday.

Track Meet

If you like a lot of scoring, you probably would have had a blast in Oakley on Friday.  The Hornets picked up an important conference win over Murtaugh, 76-38, in a game that did not lack for big plays.  Oakley quarterback Kyler Robinson threw for 356 yards and two touchdowns each to Kooper Beck (151 receiving yards) and Isaac Cranney (143 receiving yards) as the Hornets raced to a 32-8 halftime lead.  Murtaugh tried to come back behind the running of Jr Benites (179 yards, 2 TDs) and Soyer Young (175 yards, 3 TDs) but Oakley just kept scoring, nine touchdowns in all, in improving to 2-1 on the season with a game against rival Raft River coming up next.
