Death, taxes, and Sugar-Salem winning a state championship. You can pretty much set your watch by it.
The Diggers football team has won four of the last five state championships. Many of those same athletes have contributed to three of the past five championships in boys basketball.
In the 2022-23 school year, Sugar-Salem has double dipped again, winning titles in both football and basketball. Their hardwood triumph came over top-seeded Bonners Ferry in a workmanlike 52-47 win on Saturday at the Ford Idaho Center in Nampa.
After trailing 10-8 after one quarter of play, the Diggers outscored Bonners Ferry 11-5 in the second frame to take a 19-15 lead at halftime.
The Diggers lead swelled to 12 points in the third period, and although the Badgers valiantly attempted to battle back, the Diggers were too solid from the free throw line down the stretch. Sugar-Salem made 17-of-24 foul shots, good enough for a 70.8% mark.
Sugar-Salem was paced by IdahoSports.com Player of the Game Koy Sanderson, who finished with 14 points and seven rebounds. Danny Neal and Zac Dougherty each chipped in nine points as well.
Bonners Ferry displayed great balance, as four players scored between eight and ten points. Asher Williams finished with nine points and five rebounds, while Braeden Blackmore finished with eight points and five boards.
