Listen to the weekly Idaho 8-Man PrepCast

Here are the top performers from the opening weekend of 8-Man football, plus a recap of the annual Idaho 8-Man Classic.

1. Jrew Plocher, Watersprings
Picking up right where he left off last fall, the multi-purpose athlete wreaked havoc against visiting Hansen.  He rushed for 303 yards and three scores, passed for 145 yards and a score, and picked up 14 tackles on defense as his squad edged the Huskies, 42-40.

2. Angus Jordan, Genesee
The senior seems like he's been around forever and this could be his year to center stage in the Whitepine League.  In a non-conference win over Timberline, Jordan ran for 189 yards and four scores, passed for 128 yards and a score, returned a kickoff for a touchdown, and intercepted a pass on defense early in the second half when the game was tied.

3. Porter Pickett, Oakley
After being voted second-team All-State as an offensive and defensive lineman as a junior, Pickett announced his presence as Oakley's new quarterback with authority.  The lefty tossed four touchdown passes and ran for a fifth score to help the top-ranked Hornets overpower fifth-ranked Prairie in the Idaho 8-Man Classic on Saturday.

Honorable Mention
Treyton Miller, Butte County
Tristen Smith, Camas County
Nate Shelton, Clark Fork
Bass Myers, Clearwater Valley
Dan Fletcher, Deary
Price Thomas, Glenns Ferry
Kaelun Jones, Horseshoe Bend
Colton Ocain, Kamiah
Jagger Hewett, Kendrick
Terrell Ellenwood-Jones, Lapwai
Wyatt Webb, Lewis County
Junior Benites, Murtaugh
Ian Hill, Notus
Trenton Lorentz, Prairie
Tyrus Swift, Salmon River
Rylan West, Timberline
Chandler Blazzard, Troy
Landon Streeter, Wallace

A lot of weeks, Clearwater Valley's Bass Myers and Clark Fork's Nate Shelton would have been two of the week's top stars.  Myers scored all three of his team's touchdowns and dominated on defense, recording two sacks and multiple tackles-for-loss in his team's win over Glenns Ferry.

Meanwhile, Shelton ran wild in a North Star League matchup against Lakeside, gaining 269 yards on just 16 carries, scoring three times.  Clearwater Valley (Division 1) and Clark Fork (Division 2) are both teams to keep an eye on as potential playoff squads.

8-MAN CLASSIC RECAP

There were just three games instead of the originally scheduled four on Saturday at the annual Idaho 8-Man Classic at Middleton High School.  The takeaway, despite the scores, is fans may have seen six playoff teams in action.

Kendrick and Oakley, who each won big, both have the look of a team that could defend their state titles.

Clearwater Valley played a solid game, getting great production from Myers and fellow RB/LB Anthony Carter, and the Rams did so without one of their top weapons, Tiago Pickering, who didn't play.

Notus standout senior Carter Woodland contributed despite being less than 100 percent, Glenns Ferry's three-headed offensive lineman triumvirate of Landon Stuart, Landon Mills and Price Thomas could give teams problems, and Prairie, despite the score, should be encouraged with the play of several of its players.

Starting the season with a new coach (T.T. Cain), a sophomore quarterback (Levi Hinds), and a host of new players in prominent roles was never going to be easy - having to start against a team as powerful as Oakley was a monumental challenge.  A better read on this team will come over the next three weeks during home games against Troy and Potlatch before a road matchup against Genesee.

TAKING AN EARLY LEAD

It's hard to put too much stock into Week One, but there are three teams that really showed the state why so many coaches believe they're state championship material.

Oakley (Division 1), Butte County (Division 1), and Kendrick (Division 2) all passed their initial eye tests with flying colors.  If each team can avoid injuries, it's hard to not see them playing deep into November this fall.
