Team Preview:
Written by: Sven Alskog
There is plenty of excitement in Malta for the upcoming basketball season, with the Trojans a threat to enter the top portion of the conference standings this year behind a talented returning core.
Back are juniors Kayden and Kolten Hitt, along with seniors Ivan Poole and Austin Tuckett. Both Hitt’s were named Second Team All-Conference last season for their efforts on the guard-line, while Poole and Tuckett will again be expected to provide a strong low-post presence against, for the most part, smaller oppositions.
Perhaps the biggest sources of excitement come in newcomers Wacey Holtman and Carson Schumann. Holtman is an athletic specimen who has dominated on the football field for Raft River the past couple years. He now hopes to bring that athleticism onto the basketball court, providing size as well from the outside, creating matchup nightmares.
Schumann will compliment him and look to add scoring for the Trojans.
“We will be aggressive on both ends of court and hope to have five guys on the court that will be a threat to score,” said Head Coach Brian Poole.
To reach the next level, the Trojans will look to improve both defensively and on the boards.
“It’s easy to get excited about playing offense, but how hard you work on defense will be the story of your success,” stated Poole.
Raft River has plenty of size and athleticism to go with it, the key will be getting the ball in the basket on the offensive end. Poole says he hopes to see improvement in shooting and execution in the half court.
The attacking defensive philosophy should again give the team plenty of opportunities in the open-floor, but in the instances where the Trojans need to slow it down and create shots, expect to see improvement from the more experienced group this season.
