It’s obvious what the goal for each team is in the 3A Sawtooth Central Idaho Conference for the coming season.
Beat Buhl.
Last season the Filer Wildcats pulled in one of those two conference victories over the state runner-ups with a 53-49 win on the road in early February. What Filer will remember more vividly from last season however was the way it ended, with a tough 50-49 loss to Kimberly in a game in which a win would have given the Wildcats another chance to knock off Buhl.
While Filer fell just short last year, the new campaign looks to bring plenty of promise once again. All-Conference selections Connor Tews, Cooper Moon and Kaden Koepnick all return for Head Coach Allen Kelsey. Tews will lead the way on the perimeter with his strong shooting, while Koepnick and fellow senior Bryar Jones are key players on the interior.
“[We have an] excellent shooter in Connor Tews,” said Kelsey. “We need to spread the scoring around and become more balanced.”
Filer will run a slower tempo on the offensive end than most teams in the 3A, which is part of the reason they have been able to hang with Buhl at points previously.
When the Wildcats avoid turnovers and take smart shots, the perennial conference powers have found difficulty getting into what they are accustomed to with their typical blistering pace.
Each team in the conference has shown the ability over the last few years to beat anybody on a given night, with the task now for a team to show it can not only beat Buhl once, but twice, to overtake the defending conference champions.
