The cupboard is full of boys’ basketball players at Minico High School. This has 3rd year head coach, Ty Shippen, more than optimistic about the 2015-16 season.
With four returning starters, the Spartans are going to be a team to be reckoned with in the Great Basin Conference. Seniors Josh Pilling, Jeremy Stevenson, and Peyton Bailey along with junior Mathew Brumley bring a ton of experience back to a Minico squad who lost in last year’s state play-in game to Bishop Kelly.
While Pilling and Brumley were 2nd team all-conference last year, Minico hopes to get contributions from some new faces. Juniors Tyson Durrant, Carson Manning, and Colton Hardy hope to work themselves into an already deep Spartan lineup. Needless to say, depth is one of the strengths of this year’s team. You can also file “versatility” into the strength column as well.
“At most positions we have the ability to shoot the three, slash to the basket, or post in the paint. This flexibility helps us to stretch the floor and use some of our size and speed,” says Shippen.
According to Shippen, there are several areas that needed addressed in the off season. Last year Minico struggled with turnovers and decision making. However, with the experience coming back this season, the Spartans should be much improved in those areas.
There are a lot of 3 point marksmen in the Great Basin Conference and thus perimeter defense has been a point of emphasis for the Minico coaching staff. The Spartans would like to do a better job of getting in passing lanes and getting their hands on some passes which might interrupt the shooting rhythm of many Great Basin teams that pass and shoot well.
There is a lot to be excited about if you’re a Spartan faithful. According to Coach Shippen, his team had an excellent summer and is excited for the upcoming season.
Game to watch: January 28th as Burley comes to Minico High School. Home games at Minico are a unique experience and rivalry games, such as Burley, are standing room only.
