The first enrollment count has been released by the IHSAA. These enrollment numbers come directly from the State Department of Education and reflect the total number of students in each high school in Idaho that is an active member of the IHSAA.
These number are used to determine in which classification an individual school will compete in athletic and academic events. There are two counts each year: November 1 and March 1.
There are six classifications in Idaho, broken down in the following student enrollment categories:
5A: 1,280 students and over
4A: 640-1,279
3A: 320-639
2A: 160-319
1AD1: 100-159
1AD2: 99 or less

Before I go on, this is not the FINAL count. This is just the FIRST count. It gives us a good idea of which schools may be moving in the next classification cycle.
As of the November count, several schools could be moving up or down:
1. Wilder and Lakeside show numbers above the 1AD2 threshold and would be moving up to 1AD1 if the numbers hold.
2. North Star Charter and North Fremont show numbers below the 2A threshold and would move down to 1AD1 if the numbers hold.
3. Wallace and Valley show numbers above the 1AD1 threshold and would move up to 2A if the numbers hold.
4. Emmett shows numbers above the 3A threshold and would move up to 4A if those numbers hold.
5. Skyview, Kuna and Rigby show numbers above the 4A threshold and would move up to 5A if those numbers hold.
6. Idaho Falls and Skyline show numbers below the 5A threshold and would move down to 4A if those numbers hold.
These schools can petition to play in a higher classification or to stay at the same, current level. A school cannot petition down. These cases are taken on an individual basis and are handled by the IHSAA. There are a few schools that are playing at a higher classification than what their current numbers show. (Example: Genesee, Horseshoe Bend, Raft River, Riverstone, Greenleaf Friends)
Of note, there are some schools that, as of now, are set to be in their current classification when the next cycle begins in 2016 but could move up or down depending on the March count (meaning that their numbers are close to the high or low thresholds for each classification). Those schools include:
Caldwell (up to 5A, currently with 1262 students)
Shelley (up to 4A, currently with 638 students)
Parma (down to 2A, currently with 338 students)
Butte County (down to 1AD2, currently with 100 students)
Hagerman (down to 1AD2, currently with 108 students)
Declo (up to 3A, currently with 313 students)
Cascade (up to 1AD1, currently with 98 students)
Marsh Valley (down to 2A, currently with 324 students)
