A 17-year-old Boise high school junior has been reported missing by his family after he failed to show up for a hunting trip in Emmett Saturday morning.
Hunter Young is a student at Capital High and plays for the school's basketball team. He played in a game Friday night and was last seen when he went to bed at about 11 p.m. Friday, said Krista Young, his mother.
Boise Police spokeswoman Lynn Hightower confirmed the family has filed a missing persons/runaway report with police. She said there is no evidence of foul play and cannot provide any other information about the case.
The teen was supposed to meet family members at 8 a.m. Saturday in Emmett. But he never showed up and hasn't been seen since.
Krista Young said she and her husband, David, called Hunter's cellphone repeatedly after they learned he didn't show up in Emmett. Eventually, a person answered Saturday afternoon — someone at a Circle K store in Connell, Wash.
Connell is a city of about 5,000, about a 45-minute drive north of the Tri-Cities.
Connell Police Officer Richard Kepple confirmed that the teen's cellphone had been found about 5 p.m. Saturday in the store. The ringing phone attracted the attention of a customer, who turned it over to police, according to Chief Michael Kessler.
Kepple said officers checked store video and didn't see any evidence the boy had gone into the store. A search of the phone showed a map to Priest Lake in North Idaho.
Hunter Young does not have family or know anyone in Connell or Priest Lake, his mother said. She said she is unaware of any problems or issues the boy may have been having that might have prompt him to leave the area.
"This is so unusual for him not to show up somewhere or not call. We are in the middle of basketball season," said his mother, noting that Hunter is a starting guard. She said he took with him Saturday morning only the equipment he needed for bird-hunting.
David Young flew to Tri-Cities Monday morning to search for Hunter and distribute flyers.
Hunter is 6 feet tall, has brown hair and blue eyes, and weighs about 170 pounds. He drives a 2002 red Pontiac Sunfire with license plates 1A1V289.
