It’s not often that Southeastern Conference football (SEC) plays any sort of role in Idaho’s High School football season, but the fallout of Aubrun’s coaching changes last fall has done just that.
With his $15.3 million buyout in hand, and in no need of immediate work, former Boise State head coach Bryan Harsin decided to come back home to Boise – and his son Davis is along for the ride. It just so happens that he is pretty good at football too.
But Davis won’t be the only star of the show at Eagle this year. New head coach and former offensive coordinator James Cluphf says sophomore quarterback Austin Ramsey will split time at the position with Harsin, adding that both can run and throw the ball very effectively.
Despite the two big names at quarterback, the Mustangs will be without their top offensive threat from last year in Ian Duarte. The speedy receiver was ironically recruited by the son of another former Boise State head coach and Boise native in Cody Hawkins, the new head coach at Idaho State University. Duarte was one of the lone bright spots on an Eagle offense that struggled to move the ball last year, especially through the air.
“Last year our offense ran through one player,” Cluphf said. “You will see many different names with touches this year. Defenses will be stretched vertically on a more consistent basis.”
Eagle will also be without one of its top defensive players in Carter Davis, who is now playing in the PAC-12 for Stanford. Davis led the state in sacks last year, but Cluphf still says his defenses will be one of the best around, pointing to a number of key returning pieces. The list included one of the state’s best defensive linemen in Seth Brock and three-year starters Eli Mikita, Jack Giannini, Makeo Sneddon and Tristan Walker.
“Defense was the strength of the team last year,” Cluphf said. “We have a lot of experience back from a very strong unit.”
