Preseason 5A IEL favorite Post Falls returns First Team All-State post Melody Kempton and Second Team All-State guard Bailey Brennan after coming within a few points of a trip to the state championship game a year ago.
Kempton, a Gonzaga commit and three time Conference Player of the Year, will be one of the top players in the state and a matchup nightmare for opponents each game.
With all the talent coming back for the Trojans, seventh year head coach Marc Allert is excited about the prospects for his group.
“This team is very experienced and anxious to build on last year’s success. They have a good understanding of their roles and the system we run. We can play ten players with little drop off in talent,” said Allert.
One of the things that makes it tough to play Post Falls each year is the pressure defense which has allowed the team to control the pace on a consistent basis.
“We are on up-tempo team that likes to control the pace with our defense,” added Allert. “We have players who can make plays in open space, as well those who can score in the half court. Our toughness on the defensive end and consistent half court execution on offense need to improve.”
The primary challenger for conference supremacy this season looks to come from Lewiston, a team which went 14-7 last year and hopes to take the next step and earn a trip to state this time around.
While the Bengals lost a great leader in Abbey Roy, the returns of junior First Team All-IEL post Kendyll Kinzer and the senior tandem of point guard Demi Randall and post Cameron Cady should help keep them a tough out on a nightly basis. In total Lewiston returns eight varsity players.
“[We will play] pressure man defense,” said Lewiston head coach Dave Cornelia. “We will also look to run to maximize possessions. Consistent shooting will be a key to our season.”
Multiple coaches expect Lewiston to make some noise this year.
“They had a great summer together and have a lot of seniors determined to get to state,” said Lake City head coach James Anderson.
That depth and experience should help the Bengals in what is a quality conference annually.
“Lewiston returns most of their key players and has experience, making them a tough competitor,” added Allert.
Lake City, a state tournament team from a year ago, has to replace two division one talents in Nina Carlson (Idaho) and Lauren Rewers (Hawaii).
The Timberwolves do have Bridget Rieken back however and have big expectations for the forward in the new year.
“We have a great group of hard-working girls determined to get better,” said Anderson. “Keara Simpson, Bridget Rieken and Chloe Teets will [all] have more opportunities to score and have a breakout season.”
The offense looks to lead the charge for Lake City this season, with an attacking style of defense looking to force turnovers and get the ball into the open floor.
“We have very skilled post players that lead our offensive attack. Defensively we will be very aggressive with a mixture of man and zone defenses. We have lots of options of style of play on our roster,” said Anderson.
Coeur d’Alene has junior point guard Halle Kane and junior forwards Rey Louden and Emily Minerath back to lead the charge under second year head coach Scott Stockwell.
The Vikings lost multiple quality seniors from last season and may have some growing pains this year, however they are hoping their youth could surprise some people.
