Team Preview

Written by: Sven Alskog

Rick Hance is back and ready for his second go-around on the sidelines as the Glenns Ferry girls basketball coach, looking to improve the fortunes of a team that went 4-16 last season.

As can be expected there are some unknowns with the Pilots this year.

"I don’t think we have had enough time together as athletes and a new coach to really define what our 'style' is yet," said Hance. "My hope is that it will be aggressive, energetic and structured. I have as much to learn from the girls as they do from me at this point."

What is known though is that Glenns Ferry will see some more size than what the unit has had previously, helping with what has typically been a matchup disadvantage in the post.

"We are looking at a little bit 'bigger' girls in the post positions than we have generally had. Glenns Ferry is not known for its abounding height advantage. It is our team goal to play our game offensively and control the pace of the game with our offensive execution," said Hance.

Junior Luisa Garcia is the key returning post option, while Sage Wootan, Jenni Rodriguez and Gabby Hernandez control the backcourt.

Defensively the Pilots will be looking to improve communication and crash the boards.

"The bulk of the team might not be towering in height, but the girls are excellent in giving 100 percent and using their quickness to compensate," said Hance. "I would like to mix up the defense a bit to always keep our opponents having to change and adapt. The focus will be using these differing defensive strategies to dictate what [the] offense will be able to attempt."

After a hiatus, Hance is excited to get back into the head coach role, while Kelli McHone stays on the staff as an assistant.

"I am excited to get back into the role as head coach. The girls are amazing in their enthusiasm and work ethic. It will be exciting as they mix together their individual talents into the team and strive for their personal and program goals."

While there are many factors into how the first year back under his leadership will go, being consistent is at the top of the list.

"I have much respect for all of the coaches and the teams in our conference and their ability to bring their 'A' game each and every time," said Hance. "The ‘X-Factor’ is to be consistent in competition. To adapt on the move, to continually learn and improve and be able to keep the motor in tune as one runs the race will definitely be factors in success."
