Team Preview

Experience is the name of the game in Aberdeen this season, with the return of a core group of senior leadership ready to help lead the Tigers to the next step.

"We have 9 seniors on this year's team. I’ve coached these girls since they were in the third grade," said third year Head Coach Ryan Wahlen. "It’s bittersweet to coach them in their senior season. I don’t want it to end."

While second leading scorer Tasha Pocock has graduated, the return of virtually the entire rest of the team, plus an added presence on the interior, has the light shining brightly at the end of the proverbial tunnel.

That inside addition comes in the form of senior center Zoe Behrend, who missed most of last season due to a knee injury.

Her addition will be met with open arms by a strong backcourt led by Baylee Wahlen and Makenna Schritter.

"We’re an up-tempo team who relies primarily on guard and wing scoring," said Wahlen. "Schritter, Wahlen, Josefina Uribe, Destanie Ponce and Makenzie Rucker are all capable of scoring in double figures from the wing position. Schritter averaged 16.7 points per game last season as a junior."

The coach does want to get the ball into the paint more in the new campaign.

"We hope to get our posts more involved in the offense this season."

While the points should come in bunches, it's the defensive side of things where the improvement has to be made.

"We need a lot of improvement on the defensive side of the ball," said Wahlen. "We try to be aggressive on defense, but last season we often were out of position and in foul trouble. We need to do a much better job of avoiding foul trouble this season."

Look for Aberdeen to make the jump up towards the top of the conference standings this season, with their coach excited to see what the future holds.

"If we can stay focused and play together, I believe that we have the talent to compete for a conference championship this season."
