For the third time in as many years the Gooding Senators have a new face on the sideline, as Chris Comstock looks to help lead a talented roster to the top of the conference.
With All-Conference guards Bryson Comstock and Tyler Visser back, there is leadership and on-court experience in key positions to make the transition process for the new coach a smooth one.
"Two of the best guards in the 3A division. Bryson Comstock and Tyler Visser can take over games with their shooting and playmaking ability. We are athletic at all positions with speed and length."
One thing that should be a welcome sight for the Senators is the graduation of a boatload of talent from Buhl, a team which has held the top of the conference throne over recent years. The graduation of that 2016 class at Buhl opens things right up and it is a guessing game as to who will come out on top this time around, with all four of the teams having the potential to beat the others on any given night.
For Gooding to be that team, Comstock hopes to be able to utilize the bench a bit more than last year.
"We need contributions from all ten varsity players," he added.
Another reason that depth is so important is the style that the Senators play.
"Pressure and cause havoc on the defensive end. Offensively we want to get the best shot on each possession."
That pressure defense requires maximum effort on every possession, so having some fresh legs to swap in and out will be essential.
Beyond Comstock and Visser, Jack Darcy, Ruger Jennings, Sam Funkhouser, Shawn Pamplona and Cayden Loveland will play pivotal roles.
With that group it is no surprise what the strength on the defensive end is for Gooding.
"Speed and athleticism. Most of our players can defend multiple positions, which makes us versatile and able to do many different things on defense," said Comstock. "We hope to pressure teams and create chaos on the defensive end."
It all comes back to one thing though.
"Inexperienced players need to step up and contribute in all areas," said Comstock.
The new man on the sideline is excited to coach a group that he says is willing to learn and which works extremely hard. Look for Gooding to once again be right there in the mix for a state tournament berth, either as conference champions or through the play-in game.
