Three years straight Kellogg has earned the way to represent the 3A Intermountain League at the State Tournament. Kellogg is now on the radar of every team in the league. In his first year in the head coach position (formerly the assistant), Coach Jeff Nearing is looking to continue the Kellogg streak under his direction.
The first-year coach will be facing some adversity. His first assignment will be to replace four starters from a season ago. With only one senior, but six players returning, Coach Nearing is poised and confident this squad will continue the streak. Assisting with the streak and the transition of the new coach are two players who received All-Intermountain Conference honors-Toby Colburn (MVP) and Chase Jerome. Having two players at such a level and one of them being considered the top player. Coach Nearing can relax making the decision of who is going to play alongside them.
Relaxing on who his starters will be is all the relaxing Coach Nearing will do as his team seems to have that target on them from every other team in the conference. Kellogg has been the leader of the pack for three straight years and someone, anyone in the conference wants to be that team to stop the State appearance streak.
Coach Nearing understands the importance of every IML game. Each will be competitive and just as important as the next. There is a non-conference game that will be of interest to the team and its fans. The “Brawl for the Ball” against St. Maries is always an excitement filled atmosphere.
Coach Nearing is well versed with the current players and teams they face. He has been serving as the assistant coach and his current roster on varsity is made up of faces that he has been coaching over the past few years. He knows this team well. The depth and experience of this group is the top strength that will make them a major concern for every team they face. Not only are the deep and have strong chemistry, Kellogg can run and to be fast. Opposing teams will look to run with them, but will be concerned about the depth of Kellogg. Depth plays more of a role than just being able to run. The energy gets even better when bench players enter the game. This will be a concern for the opposition.
The shield isn’t bulletproof for Coach Nearing and Kellogg. Even though they are deep, can run, and have more energy than the Energizer Bunny, every player needs to become better rebounders and not rely on one or two to clean the glass. The other area is becoming better and more consistent with perimeter shooting. If those two concerns are met and are combined with the depth, speed, and energy, Kellogg looks to be another complete team this season and will be battling for another league title.
