For the Salmon girls basketball team, there’s nowhere to but up. The Savages went winless in 2014-15, struggling outside of conference play and then dealing with the Nuclear Conference, arguably the best pound-for-pound conference in girls basketball statewide. But Salmon has renewed optimism with three returning key players and first-year coach Berik Christensen.
The Savages have returning players in all three areas of the floor – perimeter player Haylee Bingham and paint presence Ellie Garrett, both seniors, and guard-forward combo Kylie Peets, a junior. Point guard Kaitlyn Burgess, a sophomore, will help quarterback the Salmon offensive attack.
Salmon will look to lean on its strengths of speed and athleticism in 2015-16, combining those two assets with hard work and bonding to put the best combination of athletic ability and basketball fundamentals on the floor. Christensen says the team is learning to play together instead of just being a collective of talent on the floor.
The team’s stated goals are to raise their scoring average and lower their points allowed average by 10 points each in order to be more competitive in games inside and outside of conference play.
The state tournament may be a tough ask, as the Nuke is a brutal conference at the top, but Salmon will hope to take a step forward toward the top four of West Jefferson, Ririe, Firth and North Fremont this season. The conference opener against North Fremont will go a long way in showcasing how far the Savages have come, or how much farther they have to go.
