Team Preview

Written by: Sven Alskog

In a highly competitive 4A District 5-6 Conference, Preston looks to be one of the teams to shrink the gap between teams 2-5 and Century at the top.

The Diamondbacks have dominated the conference recently, although the team lost outstanding low-post player Henny Hearn to graduation after last season. Hearn has now moved on to play collegiately at Montana.

Century also lost guard Sarah Holt to Colorado Christian.

The time is now for Preston.

The Indians return four seniors, featuring point guard Megan Porter and fellow backcourt mate Kaely Alder.

Along with the perimeter players, Head Coach Robert Donaldson has Natalie Durfee and Sandy Covert back to solidify the inside.

Gone however is Preston’s center from last season, Lottie Roberts, a senior this year who will not be able to play due to injury.

Similar to last season, Donaldson’s group will feature an attacking defense that will aim to make things difficult for the opposition.

For Preston to be successful, the team will need to force turnovers and allow for easy transition buckets.

On top of the seniors, back is guard Morgan Hall, a good ball-handler who can also score when needed.

What makes Preston dangerous potentially is the depth of the guard line. Each of these players has the ability to make long distance shots, something which wasn’t as consistent as it could have been previously.

The real key with Roberts out for the season will be Durfee and Covert having big seasons inside.

According to Donaldson, rebounding and outside shooting will be the two x-factors in the success of the season for the Indians, two areas which will be needed against expected conference leaders Rigby and Century.
