Team Preview

Written by: David Bashore

An 11-10 record isn’t usually where Butte County has found itself at the end of the season in recent years. But that’s where a young Pirates squad sat at the end of 2014-15, though nine players return from that squad determined to have a bounceback season in 2015-16.

Butte County has returning all-conference player Macy Hansen, a junior guard, to go with returning sophomore guard Shay Lambson, who missed most of last season with an ACL injury but should bolster the Pirates on both the offensive and defensive ends of the floor.

The team has a variety of skills within its returning players, including a pair of good ball-handlers and shooters, and some quality rebounders. Although it was a season of taking lumps, last season’s experience should benefit Butte County when it comes to dealing with press defenses and generating better shot opportunities.

Defensively, the Pirates have balance between perimeter and paint, which is every team’s dream because opposing offenses have to effectively pick their own poison. Where the team needs to double down is in the quickness and opportunism departments, forcing more turnovers and then cashing those in at the other end.

There are only four conference games, between three district teams – Butte County, Challis and Grace – and only one of those three will qualify for the state tournament. That means high stakes in those four conference games heading into the district tournaments, but it also allows for more nonconference opportunities for Butte County to put things together to put itself in the best position possible to get back to where it feels it belongs: the state tournament.
