After winning the 5A State Championship last season, the Mountain View Lady Mavericks return as one of the heavy favorites to repeat as Champions heading into the 2015-16 5A Southern Idaho Conference season.
It’s not hard to see why with seven members of last year’s state championship squad returning this season. The Lady Mavericks will be led once again by State/District Player of the year, Gatorade player of the year, and U-19 Olympic team member Destiny Slocum. Slocum had a busy off-season playing for the U-19 Olympic team and made the switch to head out east to play for the University of Maryland (was a University of Washington commit) after her high school career wraps up.
Other returners for the Mavericks include senior guard, Devenee Villareal, junior guard Kayla Anderson, and junior guard, second team all-state member Abby Kreiser. Once again Mountain View will be led by reining “5A Coach of the Year Connie Skogrand, who is heading into her 13th year with the Lady Mavs. Coach Skogrand is looking forward to this season and is fully aware of the target her team will have on their back on a nightly basis.
Offense: With a quartet of guards coming back, Mountain View looks to continue to push the pace on offense. The Lady Mavericks bring great speed and outside shooting from last year’s Championship team and hope to use that speed to get out in transition. They averaged nearly 69 points per game last season, and if they want the high scoring to continue the Mavericks will need to find some toughness inside to rebound and to outlet the ball to their play-making guards.
Defense: In the opinion of Coach Skogrand speed on offense is just as important as speed on defense. Like last year, Mountain View hopes to use their speed to create pressure and subsequently create turnovers to help create easy buckets on offense. An area of concern for the Mavericks will be having an inside presence to help rebound and bring toughness down low.
Wrap Up: “Nothing Less” is the motto this year for the Lady Mavs. Mountain View will have the experience to win another title this season, but the challenge will be if they can find consistent post play to play with their speedy guards and staying healthy throughout the season. After putting on the state championship crown last year, these Lady Mavericks hope to go back-to-back and settle for nothing less than another state championship.
GAMES TO WATCH: Mountain View’s lone loss last year was at the hands of 5A state runner-up Boise. They will face each other at least twice this year, once in November and once in January. Head over to IdahoSports.com to check out dates and times.
