Team Preview

Written by: Ryan Lee

Heading into the 2015-16 season the Borah Lions will return eight players from last year’s team that went 9-12. Coaching Borah again this season is fourth year head coach Jason Willer. The Lady Lions will have three returning starters and an All SIC Honorable mention that came off the bench. Heading into her third season, second team All SIC member, Kiana Corpus will lead Borah’s offense at point guard again this season. She averaged 11 points and three assists per game last season. Corpus is an experienced leader and has great quickness to get to the bucket and create opportunities on offense.

Other returners for the Borah include honorable mention All SIC member/senior wing, Michal Bilger, honorable mention All SIC member/sophomore wing, Alyssa Bolt, junior guard, Xaelani Comacho, sophomore guard, Alesia Jones, senior guard, Devrey Gallegos, senior wing, Madeline Bryant, and rounding out the returners is senior wing, Rachael Schoonover. Bilger is a four year starter and brings leadership, athleticism, strength, and court awareness, that helps bring balance to the offense. Newcomers for the Lady Lions include freshman guard, Kylee Geis, and a highly touted transfer from Highland High School Maddie Geritz. Geritz started as a freshman at Highland and will be a great addition to the team this season.

Offense:
Borah’s offensive strengths come from the experience of so many returning lettermen from the 2014-15 season. Last year, Borah struggled to make shots but with their experience coming back they look to be much improved production wise this season. Getting shots has never been a problem for Borah, but making shots has been another obstacle. Youth has been a factor in the lack of scoring but the returning experience sets up good for a good offensive year.

Defense:
Much like the offesnsive side of the ball, the Lady Lions expect to be much improved defensively. “With the experience we have comes more patience, more aggressiveness, and a better understanding of court awareness. We hope that our experience gives us an edge over our opponents this season and helps us out offensively,” said Coach Willer. Strong half-court defense and rebounding has always been a strong suit for Borah and it should be even better than it has been the last few seasons.

Wrap-Up:
Everyone around the program is excited to see the improvement of the returning letterman and the exciting new additions. Health is always a factor for any team, but it should be an exciting, and improved year for these Lady Lions if they can cut down their turnovers and turn their shooting woes around.
